Most ships stay 8 to 10 hours at Carnival's Isla Tropicale or the Port of Roatan in Coxen Hole, about 3 miles apart. Snorkel boats start at $40 without transfers; private island tours at $65.
Put in your ship's arrival and all-aboard times from your cruise planner. Each tour is checked against the time you have, minus the buffer you choose for getting off the ship and back to the pier.
Example times are filled in. Your cruise line's daily planner has the real ones, and a tender port needs more buffer.

Roatan has two cruise terminals about 3 miles apart, and port assignments can change, so Roatan Exclusive tells guests to go by the ship's app and announcements. The Port of Roatan, in Coxen Hole, is managed by Royal Caribbean Group and has two berths, and ships can also tender offshore. Wikipedia lists Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, MSC, Norwegian, Regent Seven Seas, Oceania and Virgin Voyages there, and West Bay Tours labels it the Norwegian and Royal Caribbean port.
Isla Tropicale, the former Mahogany Bay Cruise Center at Dixon Cove, is owned by Carnival and covers 20 acres. Cruise Hive gives its South Pier as just over 475 ft and its North Pier as 538 ft, with Carnival ships taking priority and Princess, Holland America and Costa also calling. It has no tender option. Inside are 22 shops, a pharmacy and an ATM, and Mahogany Beach is a walk along a nature trail and raised walkway, or a $14 chair lift ride ($8 for children).
Independent guides wait outside the secured terminals. At the Port of Roatan, Roatan Exclusive has guests leave through Gate 1, turn right and keep to the sidewalk rather than cross the street. At Isla Tropicale the route climbs through the port village to the Independent Tour Guide pickup area. Port taxis there belong to the regulated Mahogany Bay Taxi Association and have no meters, so settle a flat fare first; Cruise Hive says most rides cost under $20.
Gumbalimba Park publishes upcoming ship calls for both terminals in local time. Its list, updated October 21, 2026, shows most ships arriving between 7 and 10 am and sailing between 4 and 6 pm, which gives 8 to 10 hours in port. The shortest call on it is Norwegian Gem's on November 19, from 7 am to 1 pm. On November 17 the list puts four ships at the two-berth Port of Roatan.
Roatan stays on UTC-6 all year with no daylight saving time, Roatan Exclusive notes, and the company states its cancellation deadline and support hours in Roatan time. Compare the ship's clocks with island time before agreeing on a pickup. Roatan Exclusive plans to have guests back at the port at least 90 minutes before the published departure and treats the ship's all-aboard time as final. Gumbalimba advises leaving extra time for the ride back.
Roatan lies on the southern edge of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest barrier reef system on Earth. West Bay Divers runs boat snorkel trips with a divemaster for $40 without transfers. Its $105 Ultimate Cruise Ship Package adds round-trip port transport and a second boat snorkel, with a PADI-certified guide, gear, fruit and water. The Roatan Marine Park, formed in January 2005, started patrols in the Sandy Bay-West End Marine Reserve to curb unsustainable fishing.
West Bay Beach is about 12 miles from Isla Tropicale, at the island's far west end. Celebrity's port guide calls it shallow and says entry carries a fee covering restrooms and changing rooms. West Bay Tours' private island and mangrove tour takes about 5 hours at $65 a person and ends there for cruise guests. Earlier stops include the Iguana Farm, home to about 3,000 iguanas, Oak Ridge's stilt houses and a water taxi through the Jonesville mangrove tunnels.
At Gumbalimba Park a day pass costs $25 to $45 and the zipline $40 to $45, and the Park + Zipline package with transport is $65. The park suggests allowing at least 2 to 3 hours, more with a combo, and offers lockers because bags are not allowed in the animal areas.
Of the four operators listed here, only Roatan Exclusive publishes a return buffer: back at the port at least 90 minutes before departure. It runs private vehicles sized to your group and takes a US$50 deposit. Cancel 24 hours ahead (Roatan time) for a full refund, and if the ship skips Roatan because of weather or an itinerary change, it refunds everything, deposit included. It quotes prices per itinerary rather than listing them.
West Bay Tours also runs private trips, for 2 to 30 guests with 3 days' notice, and its guides Marco or Zenolla collect guests at either terminal. It refunds in full for cancellations at least 3 days out, or if weather forces it to cancel, and its page does not cover a missed port. Lunch, Iguana Farm admission and the $8 water taxi cost extra, and groups of more than 4 get a discount.
Gumbalimba Park and West Bay Divers sell set packages with port transport. Gumbalimba arranges pickup from either terminal once you book, with details that vary by port, and only folding wheelchairs fit on its bus. West Bay Divers' snorkel page names no port, pickup time or cancellation terms for its $105 package. Neither company states a back-to-ship promise.
