Quick picks

Will it fit your day in Sitka?

Put in your ship's arrival and all-aboard times from your cruise planner. Each tour is checked against the time you have, minus the buffer you choose for getting off the ship and back to the pier.

From each operator's own website, checked October 22, 2026. How we compare.

Halibut Point, Crescent Harbor and O'Connell Bridge

Most major lines tie up at the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal, about six miles north of downtown, Visit Sitka says. In the 2026 schedule from Cruise Line Agencies of Alaska, the terminal's outside and inside berths took most calls. CLAA's berth list also carries a code for the Old Sitka Dock, which no 2026 call used. A free shuttle runs continuously on ship days to Harrigan Centennial Hall downtown, about 10 to 15 minutes each way, and local tour operators also have desks at the terminal.

Ships that anchor send tenders to one of two downtown landings, and Visit Sitka ties each to the schedule's codes. Ships coded CR land at Crescent Harbor, next to Harrigan Centennial Hall, and ships coded BR at the O'Connell Bridge Dock, about five minutes' walk from the hall. In 2026 most anchored calls, by smaller ships such as Star Seeker and Luminara, used the Bridge Dock. Expedition ships such as National Geographic Sea Lion use the Petro Marine Dock or Gary Paxton Industrial Park and usually provide their own transport.

Adventure Sitka's catamaran boards about 100 feet from the ship at the terminal, and its bear and homestead trip returns guests to the ship by coach. A Whale's Song meets in front of Harrigan Centennial Hall, 330 Harbor Drive, where the shuttle stops. Sitka Fishing Excursions picks up and drops off at the cruise ship dock, and Sitka Expeditions arranges downtown pickup about a week ahead. Sitka Sunshine Kayaks launches from Herring Cove and arranges transport on request.

Eight to nine hours and the shuttle queue

Carnival Miracle was listed from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on May 3 in the 2026 schedule from Cruise Line Agencies of Alaska. Voyager of the Seas had 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on May 12, and Anthem of the Seas 6.5 hours, 9:30 am to 4:00 pm, on May 13. Calls ran from 6 hours to 12. Volendam opened the season on April 26, and Eurodam made the last call on September 30.

Shuttle seats from the terminal are booked by time. The terminal asks passengers to reserve early at reservation.sitkadock.com, since the reservation sets your place in the queue. Visit Sitka says standby riders board first come, first served as space opens, and the terminal warns that a return reservation may be needed on high-demand days. Sitka keeps Alaska time, one hour behind Pacific time, and Visit Sitka's cruise calendar is set to it.

A Whale's Song tells cruise guests to leave their cabins 45 minutes to an hour before the tour departs. That covers a 15-minute walk to the shuttle, a 15-minute queue and a 15-minute ride, and it wants guests at the meeting point 15 minutes early. Sitka Sunshine Kayaks asks for the ship's arrival and all-aboard times before confirming a booking. Sitka Fishing Excursions and Sitka Expeditions both state a guaranteed on-time return.

Silver Bay, Fortress of the Bear and salmon

Visit Sitka lists 26 businesses running wildlife boat tours and water taxis. Adventure Sitka's 1.5-hour coastal cruise is $169 on a catamaran for up to 42, leaving from the terminal. Captain Mike's and Sitka Expeditions both list 2-hour whale and wildlife trips at $175. A Whale's Song runs 2, 3 or 4 hours for $199, $284 or $324 plus Sitka sales tax, on a 43-foot catamaran with a heated cabin. Sitka Expeditions adds bear viewing to its wildlife tours in August and September.

Adventure Sitka's 3.5-hour Fortress of the Bear and Silver Bay Homestead trip costs $269 and ends with a coach ride from Sawmill Creek back to the ship. Sitka Sunshine Kayaks' guided paddles take 2 to 6 guests: $125 for 3.5 hours in Silver Bay, or $150 for its Blue Lake waterfall and rainforest trip, 3.5 to 5.5 hours inside Tongass National Forest. Both need at least two guests to book.

The priciest independent option is fishing. Sitka Fishing Excursions' shared charter for cruise passengers costs $595 per person plus tax and runs with three or more bookings. It lasts your time in port and includes gear, lunch and delivery of your catch to the processor. The license, processing, footwear and gratuity are extra, and a 2026 fuel surcharge of 6 to 10% applies. For comparison, Holland America lists a private Sitka wildlife tour for up to six at $2,199.

Missed-ship refunds, 30-day windows and yellow jackets

Sitka Fishing Excursions backs its on-time promise with money: if its captain misses the ship, it refunds in full and pays for transport to the next port. Its booking terms are the tightest here, with a nonrefundable 15% deposit, 50% back at 60 days or more, 25% at 30 to 59 days and nothing inside 30 days. It also says it is not responsible for cruise line schedule changes. On request it offers 10% below a cruise line's published Sitka fishing rate for new shared bookings.

A Whale's Song allows free cancellation up to 30 days out, refunds or reschedules when seas stop the tour, and refunds in full if the ship cancels Sitka. If the ship runs late, it may shift the departure. Captain Mike's refunds less a 10% fee 24 hours or more ahead, nothing after that, and in full if the ship or the captain cancels. Adventure Sitka refunds the cruise portion when its captain cancels for weather, and it may cancel departures below its six-guest minimum.

Captain Mike's takes 2 to 6 guests and A Whale's Song caps its catamaran at six, while Adventure Sitka's catamarans carry up to 42. Sitka Expeditions charges $1,200 for a private boat for up to six, or $2,200 for up to 13 aboard the Constellation. A Whale's Song staff wait in yellow jackets with a company sign at Harrigan Centennial Hall. For guests who tender in, its meeting spot is at the top of the gangway.

Watching from shore

  • Sitka National Historical Park. No entrance pass is needed for the park, according to the National Park Service.

Before you book

  • Reserve a shuttle time at reservation.sitkadock.com before the ship arrives. The reservation sets your place in the queue, and on busy days you may need a return reservation too.
  • Harrigan Centennial Hall, where the shuttle stops, has an information desk with printed maps, and tour vendors there often sell same-day trips.
  • Sitka Sunshine Kayaks takes paddlers aged 10 and up who weigh 50 to 265 pounds and stand no taller than 6 feet 6 inches, and children paddle with an adult.
